Hearing Aid Repairs

Hearing aids in the palm of a hand

Are you having problems with your hearing aids? You may be wondering if it’s time to get a new pair of hearing aids entirely, or if you can repair them. While it may be tempting to get a new pair and upgrade your technology, you can take your hearing aids into your audiologist for repairs.

How Hearing Aids Get Damaged

Hearing aids contain fragile technology, which means that if they are jostled around or dropped, they can suffer damage. If they fall on the ground and your pet finds them, they can wreak havoc on your devices. The same thing can happen if your toddler gets ahold of them and puts them in their mouth. Exposure to moisture, excess heat, dirt, and an abundance of ear wax are all potentially damaging to your hearing aids. Keeping them (and your ears) clean is the key to avoid plugging the tubing and receiver. Be sure you keep your hearing aids properly stored when you’re in the shower or swimming—even waterproof hearing aids aren’t indestructible.

The Cost of Repairs

The cost of hearing aid repairs is dependent upon the level of repairs that you need. First and foremost, before you go in to see your audiologist, check to see if you need a new battery. It’s a quick fix that may do the trick, much like turning your computer off and on fixes any glitches. The cost to fix your hearing aids will depend on these three main factors:

  • If your hearing aids are under warranty
  • The level of damage to the hearing aid(s)
  • The cost of replacement parts

If you have very old hearing aids, the cost to replace them may be less significant than the cost to repair them. Your audiologist will help you make the best decision for you.
